Paso Robles is full of cool wineries and vineyards that offer so much more than just great tasting wine.

4 Unique Wineries in Paso Robles

1. Sculpterra Winery

5015 Linne Road, Paso Robles CA

Sculpterra started out as the home of Dr. Warren Frankel and his family. They planted 20 acres of pistachios and 20 acres of Cabernet Sauvignon grapes. Early success led to the operation’s expansion in 1997 with more Cabernet Sauvignon, 10 acres of Zinfandel and 10 acres of Merlot. 20 years later, and the vineyard is still growing and producing premium wines.

But what makes Sculpterra unique is its collection of fine art and sculpture garden. The art begins immediately upon entry. The gate and fence were crafted by local blacksmith Robert Bentley. Bentley also lent his expertise to the chandeliers in the tasting room and the ornate awning at the entry way. Fun fact: the tasting room once served as Bentley’s workshop.

Dr. Frankel commissioned world renowned sculptor John Jagger to create the works situated throughout the gardens. The bronze and granite sculptures are awe-inspiring, to say the least. Jagger’s passion for the underwater world, cats and horses is evident. A 10-foot bronze “Mermaid” rises from the fountain. A 20,000-pound granite “Puma” is a staggering sight to see. The 16-foot bronze “Dancing Horse” is breathtaking.

Jagger has sadly since passed, but his former apprentice Dale Evers -- a renowned local sculptor in his own right -- has taken over the creative reins. Evans has already added several works to the Sculpterra grounds, including a 25-foot wind chime outfitted with butterflies.

Other artists, both local and abroad, are also well represented at Sculpterra. The winery displays the works of several featured artists, many whose works are for sale, and keeps a steady rotation of visiting artists.

2. Tooth & Nail Winery

3090 Anderson Road, Paso Robles, CA

This tasting room and event venue for Rabble Wine Company adds a touch of eccentricity to the Paso Robles wine scene. The French-Chateau-slash-industrial space is anything but ordinary.

Tooth & Nail is essentially a castle. Complete with a drawbridge and a moat. As you can imagine, it’s pretty awesome. There’s plenty of room to relax: the tasting bar, the lounge or the sprawling pergola -- and its VIP tents and cabanas -- that offers endless views. They also keep a pretty packed events schedule with live music most weekends.

The castle is also a popular wedding and event venue. And no wonder! It’s the perfect backdrop for pictures, and the dining room looks like it’s straight out of a castle.

3. Villa San-Juliette Vineyard & Winery

6385 Cross Canyons Road, San Miguel, CA

OK, so this one’s not technically in Paso Robles. But it’s definitely worth your while. Villa San-Juliette is like a Tuscan villa turned winery. Situated on 168 acres, the winery has an expansive patio and grassy area perfect for a picnic lunch. Or, grab a bite to eat there, like a cheese and charcuterie board, panini or pizza of the day. Lots of trees block the harsh afternoon sun, and there’s a fantastic breeze.

Sustainability and environmental responsibility have always been important to owners Nigel Lythgoe and Ken Warwick. In 2013, the vineyard became SIP Certified, which stands for Sustainability In Practice. All soils have a low erosion hazard, the towering oak habitat was conserved and restored during development, and staff alternative tills row middles to promote maximum biodiversity.

4. Adelaida Cellars

5805 Adelaida Road, Paso Robles, CA

Situated at an elevation of 2,000 feet, Adelaida Cellars offers one of the best views in the books. Its location is unique, but it’s the facilities that make it such a special place.

Adelaida Cellars opened up a brand new tasting room in April 2017, and if you haven’t stopped by to check it out, you need to. The room is spacious, with gorgeous vaulted ceilings and an abundance of light. Plus, it also has giant windows that open up to the estate’s walnut ranch.

The tasting room’s three-sided bar is plenty big enough for an impromptu tasting, although Adelaida Cellars offers a few upgrades that can make a simple wine tasting a truly extraordinary experience. Like the Private Reserve Tasting in the Sensory Room, which seats up to 10 people, or their exclusive member’s lounge, which offers both indoor and outdoor seating areas.

And let’s not forgot their Hilltop Tasting. Upon making a reservation, you can take your tasting to Adelaida’s Hilltop, clocking in a 2,320 feet - the highest elevation in Paso Robles. You and your group can relax under the shade of oak trees as your host guides you through a wine tasting, plus an assortment of cheeses and charcuterie. The views of the ranch and the Santa Lucia Mountains are incomparable.

Adelaida Cellars also offers what they call the “TTT”: Tour, Taste and Tailgate. You’ll drive throughout the 150-acre estate vineyards as you sip wine and enjoy a tailgate picnic.
